About the Fund
The Investigative Journalism Fund is TMF's premiere grant facility. Established to support fearless journalism, this fund enables reporters to dedicate weeks or months of investigative research into public interest stories. We accept applications year-round but review them in bi-annual cycles.
Scope and Target Areas
- Public Sector Accountability: Procurement fraud, mismanagement of local council budgets, and legislative integrity.
- Environmental Crimes: Illegal poaching rings, gold smuggling channels, and unregulated industrial pollution.
- Human Rights & Justice: Defending the safety of women and children in regional districts.
Funding and Support
Selected grantees receive a financial award of up to $10,000 to cover travel data, secure satellite communications, and research stipends. Additionally, TMF pairs each grantee with a veteran editor for 1-on-1 mentorship, and provides full legal pre-publication reviews to shield against defamation threats.
