Rural Voices Initiative

Amplifying under-reported regional stories from remote districts by supporting local community radio station hardware.

Executive Summary

“Dedicated resources for community radios in rural Tanzania. This grant covers transmitter power improvements, solar console adapters, and specialized field microphones, coupled with local community reporting workshops.”

Amplifying the Silent Majority

Over 80% of Tanzanians live outside the major urban centers, relying entirely on local community radio for their news, health bulletins, and civic updates. The Rural Voices Initiative provides local broadcasters in remote border regions with the hardware and skills needed to stay on the air.

Eligible Upgrades

  • Solar Power Arrays: 5kW off-grid solar kits with battery storage to ensure 24/7 broadcasting during power outages.
  • Signal Transmitters: Hardware improvements to extend FM signals from a 20km radius to an 80km radius.
  • Field Gear: Robust, weather-proof microphone kits and portable digital recorders for journalists working on Lake Victoria or in wildlife zones.

Who Can Apply?

Must be a registered community radio station in Tanzania.
Must operate in an off-grid or rural district.
Must commit to broadcasting at least 4 hours of local civic content weekly.
